Hospices at risk under new reforms

Fears have surfaced that hospices will be saddled with even more red tape under new NHS reforms, The Telegraph reports

Fears have surfaced that hospices will be saddled with even more red tape under new NHS reforms, The Telegraph reports

Dr Ros Taylor, chief executive of St Francis Hospice in Hertfordshire, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “My concern is that hospice care is based on close engagement with patients. The more our nurses, doctors and social workers have to spend filling in forms and phoning and faxing, that is less time with patients. We perhaps need a ministry of common sense to look at that.”

The new regulations could cause difficulties in getting funding for people who wanted help fromhospices so that they could die at home, the daily said.

“If time is short and you only have ten days to live, you don’t want to spend three days waiting for it,” Dr Taylor said.
