The 2019 winners

The winners of HEFMA’s 2019 awards were announced at the gala dinner during the annual Forum last week at Doncaster Racecourse. The prestigious awards recognise individuals and teams from Estates and Facilities for their achievements across a number of categories. 


Efficiency & Improvement Award

Winner: Cleanliness Team

Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Faced with cleaning costs significantly higher than the median for medium acute hospitals in England, the team at Musgrove Park Hospital led a challenging programme to develop a central service that would impact on quality, cost model and staffing contingency.

Individual Development Award

Winner: Theresa Gunn, Capital Building Project Manager 

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Theresa has developed her career through a continuous programme of study over a 10-year period, at the same time as fulfilling her day-to-day work activities. The consequences have been a major benefit to the department, the Trust, and the wider NHS through shared learning.

Leader of the Year

Winner: Sandra Roberts, Divisional Manager, Estates and Facilities 

New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton

Sandra has made a significant contribution to the development of E&F services. In her present role since 2014, she has transformed the team from one viewed as not always responsive or proactive by restructuring the management team and working with them to deliver a compelling vision for the future.

People Development Award

Winner: Louise English, Property and Information Officer 

Yorkshire Ambulance Service

Louise completed a Masters in Surveying (Real Estate) with Distinction in 2018, studying part time. Working with the Estates Strategy dealing with disposals, collaborations and relocations, Louise has recovered significant costs for the team leading to investment being directed into the retained estate for the benefit of frontline staff.

Project of the Year

Winner: Southampton Centre for Cancer Immunology 

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

This project delivered a major, four-storey research building with a floor area of 4,300sqm for the University of Southampton, on the hospital site. It was managed by the Trust to minimise disruption to patient services. The team worked in a collaborative but commercially astute manner engaging all stakeholders.

Team of the Year

Winner: Facilities Bed Management Team 

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust 

This newly established team provides an in-house, cost-effective, flexible and efficient bed repair and maintenance service - formerly supplied by seven outsourced contractors - from bespoke facilities. The initiative has resulted in significant savings and improved bed repair response times.

The final award of the night was presented to Pam Miller for her lifetime service to the NHS Estates & Facilities.
