Community hospital planned for Dover

Planning permission has been granted for a £21m new community hospital in Dover, theresult of a long-running campaign by residents to secure better healthcare in the area, Kent News reports.

The new facility will begin daily operations in about 18 months. Patients in the area were previously treated at Buckland Hospital but cutbacks have meant that many of them have had to travel as far as Margate or Ashford for treatment.

Plans for the facility include a new minor injury walk-in centre, day hospital services, diagnostic facilities and a renal dialysis unit. Campaigners say that whilethey will celebrate this victory, they will continue to push for step-down beds at the hospital, as they feel “There’s a lot of passing the buck between the NHS and social services as to who should be responsible for this.”
