Contractor redirects health service work to NHS

A contractor hired by the NHS to perform the government’s new disability assessments has subcontracted much of the work back to the Health Service, the Financial Times reports.

The decision by Atos, a French outsourcing company, has prompted critics of the plan to questions if Atos is really necessary in the overall process.

The assessments, aimed at cutting the number of working age disability claimants are part of a contract worth £400m over five years that covers the southeast and north of the country and about 75% of disability living allowance claimants.

Atos has come under fire for its past handling of work capability assessments but the company stressed that the Department for Work and Pensions is responsible for the final decisions on benefits.
