Maude: Drop NHS boss

Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude is reported to have called for NHS boss Sir David Nicholson to be axed, several reports say.

Maude said Nicholson should acknowledge his responsibility for deaths of 1,200 patients in the Stafford Hospital scandal. Maude told the Prime Minister that senior public sector figures must be held to account.

However, the PM has been quoted as saying that any action against Nicholson would be counter-productive as it would be wrong to hunt for “scapegoats”, while Nick Clegg said removing him from his post would only serve to “falsely satisfy” relatives of those who died.
