New ante-natal offer in Leicestershire

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust has successfully undertaken an early implementer site project “to improve the quality and delivery of the national Healthy Child Programme”, and is widening the service offered by its health visitors.

The Trust’s family, young people and children services have been working closely with Leicestershire’s midwifery and GP colleagues to develop a service that will help support parents from first booking for ante-natal care through to when the children are ready to start school. An ante-natal offer is being introduced to all new parents, helping to identify problems early and to provide additional support where it is needed.

Chris Davies, locality manager for West Leicestershire Family, Young People and Children’s Services, said: “As an early implementer site we have been able to pilot the best way to roll out an ante-natal offer from health visitors. Feedback from parents has told us that they welcome additional support in the home from an expert professional and someone who can signpost them to other services that may be able to offer support.

“When problems are identified early, the outcome for the children and parents is much more positive. We are currently developing some leaflets that will highlight the new ante-natal offer.”
