Putting the patient as the focal point of everything we do is one of the key principles for HEFMA and its members. The theme of the 2020 Leadership Forum will emphasise the way the diverse services provided by Estates and Facilities staff across the NHS impact on the patient experience.
Through our programme of excellent speakers addressing a range of topics, delegates will be able to learn from the experiences/knowledge of others, and hear about the latest guidance/policy direction. This may provide insight and inspire new thinking that can be implemented to change and improve how services are provided at their own Trust.
Cathy Winfield, Executive Chief Nurse from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust will deliver the opening address focusing on the Patient Journey and Outcomes. She will set the scene for the two-day programme, establishing the role of Estates and Facilities and looking at the current drivers and challenges behind the delivery of services.
A joint session from the Department of Health's Sullivan Beaver and Craig Black, Director of Resources at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, WSFT, will address Asset Transfer Policy and Asset Transfers in Practice. Sullivan Beaver will provide the policy guidance and Craig Black will share the experiences of WSFT, which has already gone through the process.
HEFMA will welcome our colleagues from NHS England and NHS Improvement who will lead several sessions covering a number of very important topics. First up will be Simon Corben, Director and Head of Profession for NHS Estates and Facilities, (E&F), and Adrian Eggleton, Director and E&F Operation Lead to provide an update on policy direction for the coming year.
Michael Bellas, Director and E&F Policy Lead will update delegates on the new Premises Assurance Model, PAM 2019 and its implementation. It was announced in October last year that PAM would be mandated. This is a perfect opportunity to find out about the changes and what this means for every Trust in England.
Jo Dolby, E&F Capital & Commercial Lead, will address Capital Solutions. At a time when more capital is being made available for new hospitals, refurbishment projects and maintenance than has been the case for many years, this promises to be an informative and useful session for anyone involved with capital planning or new projects.
Further Keynotes will be delivered by motivational speaker, Nigel Risner and Dr Mel Bull, MBA Director at Sheffield Hallam University. Nigel Risner is best known for his 'zoo keeping' theory. In 1983, at the age of 26, Nigel started his own business and became one of the UK's youngest CEOs. He quickly recognised that understanding the personal needs of different individuals and their communication styles is paramount to their success. The zoo keeping theory introduces rules to enable more effective and productive communication across the workforce.
Also addressing staff issues, Dr Mel Bull will provide advice around managing a multi-generational workforce. Across the UK many businesses and organisations are for the first time facing the challenge of managing five generations within a single workplace. How do you do this effectively when each generation has different aspirations and expectations, needs and wants? Mel has the answers. Expect a high-energy session to draw the Forum programme to a close.
National Chair, Jonathan Stewart, will have the last word. He will provide an update of HEFMA's activities and current priorities, including the launch of the Association's new Strategy to 2025.
The Leadership Forum takes place at Stadium MK in Milton Keynes on May 6 & 7 with an ice-breaker dinner on the evening of May 5 and HEFMA's annual awards ceremony and gala dinner on May 6. Fundraising during the gala dinner will be in support of Waveney Sailability, a Lowestoft-based charity that enables people with disabilities to enjoy sailing, learn how to sail and even compete within the club.
