75 projects awarded wave 4 STP capital funding

A total of 75 NHS projects across England have been allocated part of a £963 million fund to upgrade facilities and treat more patients, including mental health and new integrated care services in the community.

The first three waves of STP capital funding saw £1.4 billion committed over 83 schemes. All funding released is dependent on robust STP-level estates strategies. 314 wave 4 bids were submitted by the mid July 2018 deadline, totalling £10.7 billion, which would require £8.6 billion of public funding.

Projects that will receive a share of the funding include:

* A new emergency department in Walsall

* A multi-million pound eye care facility in London

* A major expansion of mental health services in Newcastle, Gateshead and Liverpool

Almost £800 million of the funding has been allocated to projects outside London in order to improve access to care across the country.

As the funding bids submitted far exceed the funds allocated, this does put a serious question mark against the success of schemes that have failed to secure the funding deemed to be necessary to deliver transformation. HSJ reports there will be no more STP capital allocations before next year’s spending review and lists STPs that missed out on funding as well as details of specific projects (paywalled).
