At last night’s gala dinner during the National Forum, HEFMA celebrated the winners of its 2023 Awards. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated and shortlisted. It’s a tremendous achievement, but there can only be one winner in each category. This year’s winners are:

Personal Development Award
Nick Richards, Programme Support and Lived Patient Experience – Making Room for Dignity
Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Nick joined the Trust in 2016 as a data analyst in the IT department. He was selected for his role within the Making Room for Dignity Programme as a result of his excellent organisational skills and his lived experience of mental health. He has a condition that severely impacts his speech, as well as cerebral palsy which affects his day-to-day mobility and manual dexterity. These factors make his achievements even more powerful. They have not affected his ability to excel, but rather have enriched the direct experience he brings to his role, especially when advising on the needs of patients.

Shortlisted
Jazz Matharu, Property and Space Manager, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Stephen Hinckles, Associate Director of Estates (Capital Planning), Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Samantha Tustin, Facilities Call Centre Operator, Herefordshire & Worcestershire Health & Care NHS Trust

Facilities Services, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
This team was put together to enable the provision of training and development across the whole of the Facilities Directorate. They are responsible for all training for cleaning, portering, laundry, transport and security teams and are taking on responsibility for catering training. All existing conflict resolution training content has also been reviewed and updated to ensure it reflects the core skills training framework aims and learning outcomes. New training content and a full face-to-face training programme with supporting interactive workbook and learning materials were developed and launched, including development and approval of a new conflict resolution training needs outline.

Shortlisted

St James Facilities Management Team, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust
Carl Henniker, Deputy Director of Estates
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT)
Facilities South Team, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

Project of the Year
BFS Projects
Barnsley Facilities Services
The Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Barnsley Glassworks was one of the first of the new CDCs to open. Its design moves away from an institutional feel and creates a space more akin to a contemporary retail outlet, with lots of natural light from full-height windows. As a result of a Government-imposed deadline, the timescale for design and construction was very tight, with a 14-week contract period to include the installation of complex M&E systems and radiation protection. It was an ambitious and challenging programme, but as a measure of its success, the Trust has been granted additional funding for extension to the scheme to include CT and MRI scanning.

Shortlisted
Estates Hospitals of the Future Enabling Works Team, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Facilities/Quality Assurance Team, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Capital Projects Team, Oxford University Hospitals Trust
Development RAAC Team, West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

Efficiency & Improvement
Estates Team
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (THH)
Sustainable Operation of the Estate has involved a restructuring of the estates team into four key functions: Maintenance, Compliance, Capital and Sustainability, each with its own lead. Sustainability became a key driver for the team, to not only make strides on the NHS commitment to net zero, but also maintain the dilapidated estate (Hillingdon has the second largest backlog of any hospital in the country) until a new hospital is built. The Trust has proved that through prioritisation and with the right engagement, sustainability and net zero transformations can be achieved, with gains in energy reductions and renewables, electric vehicles and zero domestic waste to landfill.

Winners of NHS Chef 2022, the team also have their own pastry section with a fully trained chef to support menu adaption. This team is flourishing because every member believes in what they are trying to achieve, and they are taking others with them on the journey.
