“Knowledge is power,” says Meiko UK MD Paul Anderson.

As sponsor of the first seminar in HEFMA’s Virtual Series, focusing on the next steps for the Independent Review of NHS Hospital Food and running in conjunction with the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA), Meiko will highlight its 2021 report, ‘Designed with waste in mind’ produced in association with FOOTPRINT INTELLIGENCE.

Paul’s 10-minute presentation to the virtual HEFMA & HCA audience will explain why we need to take a step backwards and have a good look at what we have achieved, and what needs to happen next.

“Waste is resource,” he says. “This is a core issue for HEFMA. I believe now is the time to share our knowledge and work out the most sustainable route forward, ultimately making this planet a better place for our children.”

The authors of the ‘…waste in mind’ report are independent experts and have interviewed key players, scoured the research and collaborated with like-minded professionals to produce a hefty 36 pages that puts the waste issue into 2021 perspective and talks about how to go forward.

Paul is passionate about the environment – he has previously pioneered the ‘Why care about Water?’ report in 2019.

“We have been distracted by Covid. But as we come back to a normality, we will once again regain our focus on environmental issues and especially, the fact that we are short of water and still sending too much to landfill or down the drain, when we could be harnessing this gift for the future.”

The keynote address at this inaugural event will be given by Review Chair, Phil Shelley, (Senior Operational & Policy Manager - Soft FM within the NHS Estates & Facilities Commercial Directorate at NHS England & NHS Improvement). He will share the membership of the Expert Group, the progress of Exemplar Trusts and the aims of the NHS Chef of the Year Competition.

Molly Shaher, National Chair of the Professional Association for Catering Education, (PACE), will examine the training needs of hospital catering staff and benefits training brings to all - including the individuals themselves, the whole team, the Trust and the patients.

Eleanor Morris, Special Advisor, Hospitality and Food Service at WRAP will also drill into food waste, explaining WRAP’s Guardians of Grub campaign and the resources available.

The event will be hosted by HCA National Chair, Brian Robb and is free to attend for HEFMA and HCA members. Book your place here.
