The Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) has announced the winners of its prestigious 2019 awards. The annual ceremony took place during the President’s dinner on the evening of April 11, at the HCA National Leadership and Development Forum, held at Celtic Manor in Newport.

A new award category for 2019 - the Efficiency & Improvement Award - was sponsored by HEFMA. David Wismann, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, was named the winner for the Model Ward for Nutrition and Hydration: a Collaborative Multidisciplinary Team Approach.

The awards publicly acknowledge exceptional commitment and outstanding contributions from HCA members over the last 12 months. All finalists have been originally nominated for demonstrating excellence in the chosen categories.

The judging panel consisted of HCA President, The Rt Hon Lord Hunt of Kings Heath PC OBE, Vice Presidents Mark Hayman and Alison McCree and national Chairman Stewart McKenzie.

Stewart McKenzie, National Chairman comments: “I am delighted by the number of entries for the HCA Awards this year. This proves the calibre of NHS catering. We commend the hard work, dedication and compassion of our members. Many congratulations to all of the winners and finalists.”

As part of the HCA’s bid to support those in need, the Wales branch raised money for two charities and accepted donations during the President’s dinner. The first of these is Tŷ Hafan, one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities offering care to children and support for their families throughout Wales. The second is Dementia UK, a national charity which provides specialist dementia support for families through their Admiral Nurse service. In total, the HCA raised £6000. Each charity was presented with a cheque for £3000 at the end of evening.
