The shortlist for the inaugural Sustainable Health and Care Awards has been announced. The awards are commissioned by the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) and delivered by NHS Employers.

NHS Trusts, commissioners and other health organisations from across the country have been selected as finalists in the health and care sustainability awards. The awards are divided into 12 categories (see below for full list). 58 finalists across 34 organisations have been selected.

The Sustainable Health and Care Awards highlight and celebrate the outstanding sustainable practices bringing real benefits to health and the environment such as cutting carbon, air pollution and promoting green space.

Submissions were assessed based on social, financial and environmental outcomes by a panel of 13 judges from across the health, environment and private sectors.

The ceremony will take place on November 21, 2018 at Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham, following the Sustainable Health and Care Forum.

Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive of NHS Employers, says: “To secure a lasting, thriving NHS, sustainability is more important than ever. These awards are a great opportunity for organisations to be recognised for all the hard work they do towards creating a greener, more sustainable health and care system.

“I’d like to congratulate all of the finalists and thank them for their work in making the health system a more sustainable place.”

Sonia Roschnik, Director of the Sustainable Development Unit, adds: “The Sustainable Health and Care Awards celebrate good practice across the health and care system in view of a healthy sustainable future.

“We would like to invite anyone involved in health and care to join us to support the growing innovation, research and implementation in sustainable development for the benefit of patients, staff and communities.”

Funded by and accountable to NHS England and Public Health England, the SDU works across the NHS, public health and social care system. It helps organisations across health and care embed and promote sustainable development in order to reduce emissions and pollution, save money and improve the health of people and communities.
