The Prime Minister has confirmed the 117 Trusts who will be allocated a share of £300 million to upgrade their A&E facilities ahead of winter. (See full list and amounts below). The funding aims to help the NHS to prepare for winter and the risk of further outbreaks of coronavirus. The PM has also reassured people that it is safe to visit A&E and urges anyone in need of emergency treatment to access their local service.
Full details of the projects have not been released, but the government says they could include:
• Expanding waiting areas and increasing treatment cubicles helping to boost A&E capacity by providing additional space, reducing overcrowding and improving infection control measures.
• Increasing the provision of same day emergency care and improving patient flow to help the response to winter pressures and the risk from further outbreaks of coronavirus.
Projects are to be completed within a relatively short timeframe – by the beginning of next year, so hospitals will be able to benefit from the upgraded facilities during the winter peak.
